Should be some options in there to control the NPC character in your party. You just look at your character page in game and click "scripts" or something at the bottom of that. There's no malice to firing into melee in KotOR. Only way I know of to alter companion behavior in KOTOR 1 is to take control of that companion for a time or stick the companion with the weapon appropriate for the range the companion tends to take up. Carth, ranged master though he is, tends to run up within a few meters giving himself a reduced accuracy and probably reduced chance to avoid melee damage. In others he seems reluctant to cast Force Heal even if players approach death. In some playthroughs Jolee seems to be a party-buffing wizard.
